Mitosis Detection in Breast Cancer Histology Images using Deep Neural Networks

Joint work with Dr. Dan Ciresan and Prof. Juergen Schmidhuber

In this project, we pioneered application of deep convolutional neural networks for the problem of detecting and counting cells undergoing mitosis, in histology images from breast cancer biopsies. The task is challenging also for experienced pathologists; on this problem, our algorithms won two international competitions with a significant advantage over the closest competitor.
